Vitamin D and Your Health

There are many sources today that point to a "crisis" due to the lack of vitamin D that our modern lifestyles have caused. Our exposure to sunlight, which produces vitamin D in our bodies, is at an all time low and our health is suffering. Brian Alexander on MSNBC.com says,
"Deficiency in vitamin D, a fat-soluble supplement needed to maintain normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood, does appear to be a growing problem. Some medical experts even claim we are suffering through a vitamin D deficiency "crisis." As urban societies grow and we scramble to protect ourselves from the cancer-causing rays of the sun — the primary source of the nutrient— too few of us have optimal levels of vitamin D in our bodies, some doctors say. For example, cases of rickets, sometimes in adults, are on the rise in developed countries, according to a government report."
Proper exposure to the sun and/or vitamin D supplements along side a chiropractic regimen can fend off the health problems associated with this "crisis" and help the body prevent disease.

Chiropractic - An Adjustment in Your Game

Chiropractic care is standard for many pro golfers. Professional golfer Lori West attributes the reason she's playing today to chiropractic.  Nearly two decades ago, she began visiting a chiropractor for pain in her shoulders and neck.   According to West, the care has infinitely improved her golf game.

According to Dr. Travis Ruda, chiropractor and golf enthusiast, the golf swing in and of itself isn't conducive to having a healthy back.  To have a good swing you create tension in your spine.  (this enables you to get good distance).  The tension comes from the hips stopping and the shoulders continuing to rotate. Basically, you make a coil.  You're uncoiling when you start your downswing.  Since that's an awkward movement for your back, many golfers end up with lower back problems.

Here's some chiropractic advice.

* Before your game, do some basic stretches.  Stretch out hamstrings and groin area.

* Put a club across your shoulders and lean left and right.

* Get in a position of where you would be in a swing and bend left and right.

* Grab a club behind your back and raise it up, stretching your shoulder muscles.

* Grab the club backwards, so if you normally swing right-handed, you'd grab it like you'd be swinging left-handed- and take 10 practice swings that way.   You're stretching different muscles and it will help you loosen up considerably.

* You can do neck stretches if it's tight.  Stiff neck muscles inhibit the rest of the body from turning freely.

* Golfer's elbow is a painful condition in which your arm bone becomes sore and tender.  Chiropractors can adjust the over-rotated bone.

* Orthodic stabilizers for your shoes can help improve balance so your swing is better.

* Anything that helps with flexibility eventually helps with your game.  As you get older, your swing naturally shortens since the muscles aren't as supple.  Flexibility is very important for older golfers.

* You have to have good balance if you want to hit the golf ball consistently.  A healthy spine is paramount to proper balance and posture. Improve your balance and you'll improve your consistency.

* During the winter, work on stretching the muscles of the arms, shoulders and back.

Chiropractors care for your overall body structure, not just the back.  So if your muscles are feeling out of sync, chiropractic may be the just the adjustment your body and game needs!

Chiropractors and the NFL

As the team chiropractor for the Houston Texans and also for the Carolina Panthers during their trip to the Super Bowl here in Houston, Chiropractic in the NFL is something I am very familiar with. According to an article I just read online all the NFL teams but one (the Raiders) publicly discuss chiropractic as being an important part of their athlete's health. A professional football player is well acquainted with pain, and the treatment of pain is integral to their sports regimen. Professional football is something that is wildly popular to Americans and its use of chiropractors is a great asset to public acceptance of their therapeutic value. Super Bowl XXXVIII had a reported 144.4 million viewers.

Can you feel it?

Often times, when it is time for me to have an adjustment, I can feel it. There have been times when I have had to have my hips adjusted, and a week or so later, actually felt one side "slip" back into the incorrect position. This is why it is important to have your adjustments made on a regular basis. It will be much more beneficial to keep you in the correct alignment, than to have to go back every time, and put you in the correct alignment once you are so far back out of alignment. Your body is used to being in the incorrect position, you need to get it used to being in the correct position.
You will find that once you have achieved this with the help of your chiropractor, you will have much less pain, and will simply have a much better experience in life. Let us help you.

What's that noise?

Ever wonder what the "cracking" noise is when you have an adjustment made at the chiropractors office? Luckily Dr. Harper has made much information available on his website, that helps to explain many aspects of the often times, misunderstood world of chiropractic medicine........... this is what he says about that "cracking" noise.

"The chiropractic adjustment is a quick thrust applied to a vertebra for the purpose of correcting its position, movement or both. Adjustments are often accompanied by an audible release of gas in the spinal joints that sounds like a “crack.” The sound sometimes surprises people the first time they get adjusted, but the sensation is usually relieving. Occasionally, minor discomfort is experienced, especially if the surrounding muscles are in spasm or the person tenses up during the chiropractic procedure. There are times when the audible “cracking” does not occur. This is often due to either significant muscle tightness or the person having a hard time relaxing during their adjustments. Some adjusting techniques are designed to move the spine in a way that does not produce the audible sound at all. Chiropractic is so much more than simply a means of relieving pain."

So now that you know what it is, and it's nothing to be afraid of, come on in and let's get started on your road to recovery! HARPER WELLNESS

Think adjustments are just for back pain?

Think again! Chiropractic medicine can help you, help your body, heal itself of many ailments. Chiropractic medicine is no longer simply for the occasional neck adjustment, studies have shown that keeping your body in proper alignment can keep the nervous system working properly. If the nervous system is working properly, then you will be in a much better position to fight off sickness, and injury.
If your body has suffered an injury, or you have a recurring illness, you can start chiropractic care, in order to jump start your natural healing abilities. Before you turn to medication and drugs to fight the symptoms, why not first try chiropractic medicine to find the underlying problem?

For the rest of my life?!?!

I'm sure you've heard that if you start going to a chiropractor, you will have to continue going for the rest of your life. This is simply not true. While many people will benefit from the ongoing treatment from a Chiropractor, it isn't necessary to go in as often as you might think.
You could simply go in periodically to make sure that you are properly aligned. Would you expect to be able to run your car for years and years without an oil change and alignment? Why would you expect something so important as your spine to go years and years without proper alignment? You have to take care of your spine, if you take care of it, it will certainly take care of you for years to come.

When you are ready see what it feels like to be in proper alignment, stop by and see us!

Living with pain?

Are you living with pain, and don't like the idea of trying different medications to remedy the pain? Did you know that pain is your body's natural way of letting you know something is wrong? If you mask the pain, without addressing the underlying problem, you could very well be allowing the problem to get worse. If you do that, it is likely that your pain will become worse and worse, and you will end up taking higher and higher doses of pain medication.

Why not try figuring out what it is that your body is trying to tell you? You may find that you are simply out of alignment, and this is causing different muscles to be strained, and nerves to be pressed. This is especially the case where headaches and backaches are involved. If you find a good doctor, that can successfully manipulate your spine back into proper alignment, you may experience immediate relief. You may find that your situation takes a few visits to the chiropractor, but I think you will agree that this is much better in the long run, as opposed to taking massive amounts of pain medication.

You should come by and see what we can do for you...
